America was in the throes of its darkest days with Watergate, deflation, and an oil crisis that was strangling the economy.The cruelest blow of this downturn was how it squelched demand for brash, promising, young engineers fresh out of school like Gene Desantis. He had earned his degree at the Pratt Institute on the GI Bill and probably thought his toughest days were behind him. Just a few years before he'd been serving in the Army as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander - a rarefied title he'd earned at the tender age of 22.
