Sanctuary Computer worked with The Light Phone team to bring their second handset to market—The Light Phone 2—through system architecture and product development. Light is an independent telecom company, founded by Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang in 2015. It was born as an alternative to mainstream smartphones, intentionally designed to be used as little as possible. The handset was named one of Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2019.
Sanctuary Computer’s role in this project covered three main areas: a custom smartphone OS, an eCommerce site, and product development.
The LightOS is a minimalist smartphone operating system designed to be used as little as possible. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon with a custom rendering pipeline to power an Elnk screen. LightOS is based on Android, and supports all mainstream smartphone functionalities such as Bluetooth, Sifi, Contact Sync, and more.
To support sales of handsets, SIM cards, and cases, Sanctuary Computer built a custom eCommerce experience that handles service availability, feature breakdowns, and customer support. It also facilitated the process for users to create LightOS accounts during checkout, which assigned their device IMEI at the time of shipping.
Sanctuary Computer also worked in tandem with Pragmatc and The Light Phone team to manage product development in collaboration with the Taiwanese OEM Arima. From working against development boards to shipping the final factory image for mass production, Sanctuary Computer was hands-on the entire process.
