Standardization is the process of implementing and developing technical standards based on the consensus of different parties that include firms, users, interest groups, standards organizations and governments. Standardization can help to maximize compatibility, interoperability, safety, repeatability, or quality. It can also facilitate commoditization of formerly custom processes. In terms of quality, reliability, and safety, these benchmarks can be critical to the success of companies, so businesses that actually certify these standards can gain a certain edge.
Obviously, in some cases, such standards are required in order to compete or even be able to be in business. As such, these certifications can be invaluable. Most of these certifications are done by national and international organizations, with some being done by government agencies.
